Why I'm a Bad Mom - I Won't Listen to Kid Music

A couple of weeks ago we were at the local children's museum participating in an activity and they had some music playing, suddenly a song comes on and all the parents start doing these choreographed moves. I'm pretty sure none of the people knew each other, but they all knew the same moves to a song that I had never heard. I've since learned that this Baby Shark thing is quite the viral phenomenon, but it brought a strong realization that I just don't listen to kids music.

When my son was an infant and the house got too quiet (so before he began talking), we would listen to light classical music. We stuck with light classical, because we tried some Mahler and he got too worked up. As he got a little older, I went through a modern bluegrass/Americana phase and we listened to a lot of Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the like. Then we just gave up and went with our old household standards; the music we loved in high school and beyond. There was Gaslight Anthem, The Killers, The Shins, Goo Goo Dolls, Bush, and then he found his favorite, The Foo Fighters. I cannot tell you how many questions he asks about Dave Grohl on a regular basis. He wants to know his favorite color, favorite food, what kind of car he drives. If you ask my guy what music he wants, the answer is Foo Fighters almost every time.

Now I'll admit kids music isn't banned from the house, and I actually have a bit of a soft spot for the songs by the StoryBots (their song about the color blue is pretty great) and I enjoy the cartoon as well. We have also recently started watching Beat Bugs and they have some really great guest stars on the show, and Yusuf Islam singing Here Comes The Sun on their movie is just fantastic.

I know there is good kids music out there, but when your kid names his favorite song as Hallelujah ( Puddles Pity Party is probably our favorite cover), and he requests Foo Fighter concert videos on YouTube, you just don't give in to the other stuff. Kid songs in cartoons as good as StoryBots and Beat Bugs will be tolerated, but I'll stick with his favorite music when it is time to rock out.
